UK Student Visa Guide 2026: Everything You Need to Know

The UK remains one of the world’s most popular study abroad destinations — and the UK Student visa process is more straightforward than many students expect. This guide walks you through everything you need to know to apply successfully in 2026.

What Is the UK Student Visa?

The UK Student visa (formerly Tier 4) allows you to study a full-time course at a licensed UK university or college. It is the main visa category for international students studying in the UK.

To apply, you must:

  • Have an unconditional offer from a UK university or college licensed by the Home Office
  • Be 16 or older
  • Have a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number from your institution
  • Prove you have enough money to cover tuition fees and living costs
  • Meet the English language requirement

Step 1: Get Your University Offer

Before you can apply for a visa, you need an unconditional offer from a UK institution. Most universities send CAS numbers 3-6 months before your course starts.

Your CAS number is a unique 14-character reference number that the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) system uses to verify your enrollment details. It is only valid for 6 months, so do not apply for it too early.

Step 2: Financial Requirements

You must show you can cover both your tuition fees and living costs. Specifically:

Tuition fees: You must have enough money to cover the first year of your course fees. If your fees are GBP 18,000/year, you must show GBP 18,000.

Living costs:

  • London: GBP 1,334 per month, for a maximum of 9 months = GBP 12,006
  • Outside London: GBP 1,023 per month, for a maximum of 9 months = GBP 9,207

Total example (non-London, GBP 15,000 fees): GBP 15,000 + GBP 9,207 = GBP 24,207 minimum

You must show this money has been held in your bank account (or a parent’s/sponsor’s account) for at least 28 consecutive days before the date on your financial statement.

Step 3: English Language Requirement

You must prove English proficiency. The most common accepted tests are:

  • IELTS for UKVI (Academic): Typically 6.0-7.0 overall, no individual band below 5.5 (requirements vary by course and institution)
  • TOEFL iBT: 80-100+ depending on the institution
  • PTE Academic UKVI

Important: You must use a UK Visas and Immigration-approved test provider. Not all IELTS tests are accepted — you must specifically take IELTS for UKVI (Academic), not the regular IELTS Academic.

Students from certain countries (including some from Bangladesh, India, Nigeria, and Malaysia) may be exempt if they completed their previous education in English. Check the UKVI exemptions list carefully.

Step 4: Apply Online

  1. Create a UK Visas and Immigration account at gov.uk
  2. Complete the online Student visa application form
  3. Upload your supporting documents:
    • Valid passport
    • CAS number
    • Bank statements (last 28 days)
    • English language test certificate
    • Academic transcripts (if required by your CAS)
    • Parental consent if you are under 18
  4. Pay the visa application fee (approx. GBP 490 for most countries)
  5. Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): GBP 776 per year of your course

Step 5: Attend Your Biometric Appointment

After applying online, you’ll book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre in your home country to give your fingerprints and photo (biometric enrollment). This is mandatory.

Processing time is typically 3 weeks from biometric appointment to decision. Priority services are available in most countries for faster processing at additional cost.

Working in the UK During Your Studies

Most Student visa holders can work 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during vacations. Check your CAS to confirm your work conditions.

You cannot:

  • Work as a professional sportsperson or entertainer
  • Be self-employed or engage in business activities

The Graduate Route: Stay After Graduation

The Graduate Route visa is one of the best benefits of studying in the UK. After successfully completing your degree, you can apply to stay in the UK for:

  • 2 years for Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates
  • 3 years for PhD and doctoral graduates

You can work at any skill level — you do not need a job offer. This gives you real time to build your career in the UK before needing an employer to sponsor a longer-term visa.

To transition to the Skilled Worker route for longer-term residence, you’ll need a job offer from a licensed employer at a qualifying salary level.

Common Visa Refusal Reasons

  1. Insufficient funds: Money not held for 28 consecutive days, or total funds below the required threshold
  2. CAS issues: CAS already used, expired, or incorrect course details
  3. English test not from approved provider: Using regular IELTS instead of IELTS for UKVI
  4. Gaps in travel history: Unexplained travel gaps or prior overstays in any country
  5. Incomplete application: Missing documents or unanswered sections

Timeline: When to Apply

  • Receive university offer: As soon as possible
  • Accept offer and request CAS: 3-6 months before course start
  • Complete biometric appointment: At least 6-8 weeks before course start
  • Visa decision: Within 3 weeks of biometrics (or less with priority service)

For students from Nigeria and Bangladesh especially: allow extra time. Appointments at Visa Application Centres can book out weeks in advance during peak season (July-September).
