Why Study in Malaysia?

Malaysia is a seriously underrated study destination. The country has branch campuses of top universities including Monash, Nottingham, and Heriot-Watt, so you can earn a degree with international recognition at a fraction of the cost of studying in the West.

For students from Bangladesh, India, Nigeria, and Vietnam, Malaysia offers an English-language education in a multicultural, welcoming society. The cost of living is very affordable, and Malaysia’s position as a regional business hub creates real employment opportunities.

Post-Study Work Opportunities

Malaysia’s post-study pathway works differently from Western countries:

  • No automatic post-study work visa — employment pass is tied to an employer
  • Malaysian universities assist graduates with job placement services
  • Graduates can apply for an Employment Pass if they secure a job with a Malaysian employer
  • Branch campus advantage: Monash and Nottingham graduates can use their international degrees to find jobs across Southeast Asia, Australia, and the UK
  • Malaysia’s economy in oil and gas, manufacturing, financial services, and tech creates real opportunities

Scholarships

Malaysian International Scholarship (MIS)

Malaysian government scholarship for international students to pursue postgraduate studies at public universities. Covers tuition, living allowance, and health insurance.

University Merit Awards

Private universities offer scholarships covering 20-50% of tuition for high-achieving international students. Taylor’s and Sunway universities are particularly generous.

ASEAN Scholarships

Regional scholarships targeting students from ASEAN member countries with reduced tuition rates.

Living in Malaysia

Malaysia is one of the most liveable countries in Southeast Asia. Kuala Lumpur is a modern, cosmopolitan city with great infrastructure, excellent food, and strong public transport (LRT, MRT, monorail, and buses). Students enjoy a high quality of life at low cost.

The multicultural character of Malaysia — Malay, Chinese, Indian, and expat communities living side by side — creates a welcoming environment for international students. English is widely spoken and understood everywhere. Halal food is widely available, and students from Muslim-majority countries find it particularly easy to adapt.

Safety standards are high, the healthcare system is excellent and affordable, and the food scene is famous worldwide. Street food meals cost as little as MYR 5-10 (USD 1-2). Students from South and Southeast Asia typically adapt quickly and comfortably.

Career Outcomes

A Malaysian degree provides strong regional career prospects. Many graduates find employment in the Malaysian job market, particularly in multinational companies that use Malaysia as their Southeast Asian hub. Branch campus graduates benefit from internationally recognised credentials that open doors across the region and beyond. Malaysia’s growing digital economy and status as a regional financial centre create increasing demand for skilled graduates.
